Saint Paraskevi the Great Martyr

Feast Day: July 26th Ἡ Ἁγία Παρασκευή ἡ Μεγαλομάρτυς Saint Paraskevi the Great Martyr is one of the most beloved and honoured saints of the Orthodox Church. Her name, Paraskevi (Παρασκευή), means “Preparation”, referring to the day before the Sabbath, and is a reminder of spiritual preparation and devotion to God. Saint Paraskevi was born in the 2nd century in Rome during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius. Her parents, Agathon and Politia, were devout Christians who dedicated their daughter to Christ from an early age. After the death of her parents, Saint Paraskevi devoted her life to prayer, fasting, and serving others, using her inheritance to care for the poor and proclaim the teachings of the Gospel. Blessed with wisdom and courage, Saint Paraskevi openly confessed Christ during a time when Christians were persecuted for their faith. She endured imprisonment, torture, and suffering with remarkable patience, refusing to deny our Lord Jesus Christ. Through her steadfast faith and love for God, she received the crown of martyrdom and was glorified among the saints. Throughout the Orthodox world, Saint Paraskevi is honoured as a powerful intercessor and wonderworker. She is especially venerated as a protector and healer of those suffering from illnesses, particularly diseases of the eyes, reflecting the many miracles attributed to her prayers. Her sacred relics have been a source of blessing and consolation for countless faithful throughout the centuries. Our parish and community is blessed to be dedicated to Saint Paraskevi the Great Martyr, together with Saint Barbara the Great Martyr. Her example of unwavering faith, compassion, and complete devotion to Christ reminds us to remain steadfast in our faith and to place our trust and hope in God above all things. Saint BARBARA the Great Martyr

Ἡ Ἁγία Βαρβάρα ἡ Μεγαλομάρτυς Saint Barbara the Great Martyr is one of the most beloved and widely venerated saints of the Orthodox Church. She is honoured as a courageous witness of Christ, whose unwavering faith and steadfast devotion continue to inspire generations of Christians throughout the world. Saint Barbara was born in the 3rd century in Heliopolis of Phoenicia (modern-day Lebanon) during a time when Christians faced severe persecution under the Roman Empire. She was the only daughter of a wealthy pagan man named Dioscorus, who, wishing to protect her from outside influences, kept her secluded from the world. Through her contemplation of creation and her search for truth, Saint Barbara came to know the one true God and embraced the Christian faith. After secretly becoming a Christian, Saint Barbara dedicated her life to Christ and refused to deny her faith, even when confronted by her father and the authorities. Her confession of Christianity led to her imprisonment, cruel torture, and ultimately her martyrdom. Despite immense suffering, she remained faithful and received the crown of glory as a Great Martyr of the Church. Saint Barbara is especially honoured as a protector against sudden death, danger, and calamity. She is venerated by soldiers, miners, firefighters, and all those who work in dangerous circumstances, who seek her powerful intercession and protection. Throughout the Orthodox world, many miracles have been attributed to her prayers, and her sacred relics continue to bring comfort, healing, and blessing to the faithful. Our parish and community is blessed to be dedicated to Saint Barbara the Great Martyr, together with Saint Paraskevi the Great Martyr.
